Cycling Copenhagen, Through North American Eyes Posted by: Larry

Thanks to Bob Cross for alerting me to this excellent video
------------
"While Streetfilms was in Copenhagen for the Velo-City 2010 conference, of course we wanted to showcase its biking greatness.  But we were also looking to take a different perspective then all the myriad other videos out there.  Since there were an abundance of advocates, planners, and city transportation officials attending from the U.S. and Canada, we thought it'd be awesome to get their reactions to the city's built environment and compare to bicycling conditions in their own cities."

Folks on Spokes has been very fortunate over the years to have bicycling instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists among are members.

If at least five FOS members (including those who join to take advantage of the offer) sign up to take this course, he will arrange the sessions at the convenience of the participants and charge only $25.00.

Bikes on Trains in Michigan Posted by: Larry
Date Posted: August 4, 2010, 7:07pm
In the past it was not possible to move bikes around Michigan on Amtrak.  Amtrak in Michigan does not allow bikes to be rolled on trains as they do on several Illinois and Missouri routes.  Also, because there are no Amtrak stations with baggage handling capabilities in Michigan, bikes could not be shipped in boxes.

It looks like all that is about to change.  Here is an e-mail from an official at the Michigan Department of Transportation responding to a question about bikes on Amtrak in Michigan.
=============================

Hello,

Thanks for your e-mail to MDOT. I've recently spoken to a staff person with MDOT's Office of High Speed Rail and Innovative Project...

Planning to join from Park Forest   (reply) Posted by: Larry
Date Posted: May 24, 2010, 11:19pm
Hi Frodojr,

I live between Bloom and Marian, and ride Western between 26th and 8th St (205th St)  a couple times a week.  I don't think it's too bad, but I'm not on it at the worst of the morning rush.

If you don't like the traffic on Western, you could take the side path on the west side of Western to Illinois Street (16th st), Get on Western for a block, then turn east on 15th st and work through the residential streets just south of Marian.

Here is a route from Illinois and Western to Marian that uses the residential streets south of Marian.  ...

I'm planning on joining.  I want to get into biking more seriously, hopefully beginning to bike to work at Marian Catholic this summer and next year.

I live on Ash Street in Park Forest. Wondering how safe members feel Western Avenue is?  What would be the safest route to Marian Catholic, corner of Joe Orr Rd. and Ashland Ave. in Chicago Heights?

How safe do you consider Joe Orr?

Thanks!

After I build up some endurance I might be able to join the rider from Mokena.  For now I would be looking to get on Old Plank Trail at the Old Target at about 6:00 PM on a weeknight.  That would allow for  well over 5 miles going west and the return leg before it gets dark.  We could communicate by personal e-mail since I don't ck the FOS website very often.  I ck "landhawke2002@att.net" every day.  I have the option "check this to be e-mailed each time someone replies to this topic" however an e-mail did not arrive after your May 19th post.

What did you have in mind?  10-12 mph, 10 to 20 miles might be fun on a weeknight.

I have been riding in Kankakee River State Park the past 7 years.  It is much more difficult than the flat Old Plank Trail or I&M trail.  I have been riding low miles, only 11 miles each ride, so it may take awhile to build up to longer trips.  My speed now is 10 to 12 mph, but may be higher on the flatter terrain.  I would like to find people for weeknight rides, or Saturday rides, from Matteson.  Saturday mornings from Frankfort would work too, but I didn't see anything going on at this time.  Sunday morning is in conflict with church.

Steve Buchtel, Southland Coordinator for Active Transportation Alliance, will share with us progress on the Calumet-Sag Trail, which is now moving into the design & engineering phase on schedule for construction in 2012 - a pace unprecedented in Illinois for a trail its size. Grants for amenities, trail heads and wayfinding from Senator Durbin will allow the trail to connect with each of the 14 communities it passes through, and that work is underway. Steve will also fill us in on the Happy Trails Jamboree, a fund raising ho-down for the Calumet-Sag Trail on October 1.

Thursday, June 24th, 7:30pm, Bicycle Racing USA Posted by: Mark

Come and see, Bicycle Racing USA, a lavish overview of many of the world's top pro and amateur bicycle racers caught in the heat of action: training, tactics, technique, and the excitement of man guiding a high-speed, well-tuned, two-wheeled racing machine up and down mountains, through countryside and cities, around tracks, weathering crashes and jumps, and majestically competing in marathon events.

This short 30 minute program shows the wide range of bicycle racing formats in the US; also introduces racing styles, techniques, and tactics.

This film is from the "Edwards Classic Sports Films Collection".  Harvey Edwards would be correctly described as a filmmaking raconteur: his documentaries...

I made a presentation at tonight's meeting using some slides I prepared from my Google Earth maps.  Several people asked if they could access the maps.  Yes.  Here's how:
1.  Go to my web site by using the link:  http://tinyurl.com/yg2rtuz
2.  Download a small file called a KMZ file to your computer.  It's the first file listed.
3.  Open the file.  It will start Google Earth and load in all my maps.  They cover bike trails from Michigan to Wisconsin plus suggested on road connecting routes.

I enjoyed tonight's visit and thanks for the interest in the maps.

I see you can attach files.  I'll try to...

Newbie from Mokena   (reply) Posted by: Howard

Hello Terry,

Welcome to the forum. One thing you might not be aware of is that the I & M Canal Trail consist mostly of finely ground packed limestone. It can be rather nasty on a rainy day.
Maybe not something you would want to ride a nice carbon fiber bike on. As an alternate the Old Plank Trail is one of the best trails around this area and many of us from
the club can be frequently seen riding it. Come on out and meet some of our members this Thursday.

Next Meeting ... Thursday March 25, 2010 at 7:30PM

Hi Terry,

We have probably passed each other on the Old Plank Road trail.  I ride parts of it fairly often, though I get on it at the very east end.

Watch the FOS ride schedule for rides on the I&M canal.  There will probably be one or two between Channahon and Morris this year.

What kind of road bike did you get?

I am Terry and from Mokena. I took up riding about 5 years ago as an alternative to running. I went from a cheap Mountain Bike from Target to a really nice Hybrid, to my new Carbon Fiber Road bike, which I have yet to get out on. I am always looking for riders on the Old Plank Trail. I ride in the evenings after work (25 miles) and on both weekend days weather permitting. I will do 35-50 miles depending on other things I have to do. I do get out to the Cook County trails and I do want to try the I&M trail this year. Email me if anyone just wants to get out and put on some miles. Tpaggi@me.com.
