Amish Country Bike Tour in Arthur Illinois

Joe and Kathy Williams are planning to attend the Bob Galloway Memorial Amish Country Bike Tour Sat Sept 19 in Arthur Illinois. In past years we've listed this as a FOS overnighter and invited all to join us. Here are some of the reasons we like this ride:

Free tent camping Friday and Saturday nights. This includes the use of two shower houses with flush toilets and hot showers. (A few RV spots w/electricity go for 10 per night but are on a 1st come basis, so you'd better get there early.)

Though the official Decatur Bike Club ride is on Saturday, the routes are marked on the pavement, so we turn it into a three day weekend by riding one of several route choices on Friday and riding again on Sunday.
Great price: $11 (postmarked by 8/24); $16 day of ride; plus they offer a family discount.

Great rest-stop food. The home-cooked mid-day meal at the Christian School is well worth the price ($8 or $9 on day-of-ride).

Great local restaurants with very affordable prices. We also have had a potluck some years, grilling dogs and burgers right at the campsite.
After the ride we always make an ice cream stop at downtown Arthur pharmacy featuring an old-fashioned soda fountain still in use.
Lots of local events and activities for non-riding spouses and kids. (Rockhome Gardens; Pumpkin Farm; Amish Quilt Auction weekend.)
Less than a 3 hour drive from the south suburbs - straight down I-57.

The ride is on Saturday September 19th, the weekend after the FOS picnic. Registration and ride start are at the County Fairgrounds. Hope some can join us!

For more information call (70 418-4550, ask for Joe or Kathy

DUNES OVERNIGHT
By Sallie Vloedman

Come join us for a the annual ride to Chesterton, Indiana and a visit to the National Lakeshore Dunes on AUGUST 29TH. We will leave from the H-F High School parking lot (north side ofthe school) at 9:00 am. Short hops through Homewood and Glenwood will take us to the first of several paved trails that make up the route. After a stop for lunch we arrive in Chesterton in the afternoon. If time and weather and riders' legs allow, we will go to the dunes via back roads; about an eight mile ride.

There are several restaurants within walking distance ofthe motels, so we won't have to ride in the dark for dinner, unless the group really wants to. The motels are: Super 8 -219 929 5549 and the Econolodge -219 929 4416. You must make your own motel reservation and cancel if your plans change; I have reserved my room at the Super 8: the Econolodge is across the highway. Over the years we have stayed at both places, and, while they aren't 5-star, they are clean and adequate. On Sunday we will stop for breakfast in Chesterton and lunch on the way home.

Each day is approximately 50 miles (excluding the optional ride to the National Lakeshore) and 75-80% on paved trails. Join us for good hassle-free cycling and good companionship. Add good weather and good food and what else can you want?

Let me know you are coming, so we don't leave H-F without everyone. My phone number is 708 429 9310. Don't hesitate to call me if you have any questions about the good time to be had by all on August 29th and 30th.
