Thanks to Bob Cross for alerting me to this excellent video
------------
"While Streetfilms was in Copenhagen for the Velo-City 2010 conference, of course we wanted to showcase its biking greatness. But we were also looking to take a different perspective then all the myriad other videos out there. Since there were an abundance of advocates, planners, and city transportation officials attending from the U.S. and Canada, we thought it'd be awesome to get their reactions to the city's built environment and compare to bicycling conditions in their own cities."

Video: http://www.streetfilms.org/cycling-copenhagen-through-north-american-eyes/

Traffic Skills 101 Offered

Folks on Spokes has been very fortunate over the years to have bicycling instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists among are members.

The first was Bill Lang who was one of the very first Effective Cycling Instructors in Illinois! Currently, Larry Mysz is the club's most active League Cycling Instructor, as they are now known. Larry has very graciously offered to teach Traffic Skills 101 to FOS members at half the usual cost! If at least five FOS members (including those who join to take advantage of the offer) sign up to take this course, he will arrange the sessions at the convenience of the participants and charge only $25.00.

Traffic Skills 101 gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. The 10 hour course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques. Ideally it will be scheduled over three sessions, probably two evenings and a Saturday.

Contact Larry right away to enroll -- registration will be closed when 5 people have signed up for the class or August 26, whichever comes first. The class will not be held this summer if less than 5 people have expressed interest.

Contact Larry at Larry@customized-applications.com.

Bikes on Trains in Michigan

In the past it was not possible to move bikes around Michigan on Amtrak. Amtrak in Michigan does not allow bikes to be rolled on trains as they do on several Illinois and Missouri routes. Also, because there are no Amtrak stations with baggage handling capabilities in Michigan, bikes could not be shipped in boxes.

It looks like all that is about to change. Here is an e-mail from an official at the Michigan Department of Transportation responding to a question about bikes on Amtrak in Michigan.
=============================

Hello,

Thanks for your e-mail to MDOT. I've recently spoken to a staff person with MDOT's Office of High Speed Rail and Innovative Project Advancement and she spoke with Amtrak in May about this issue. Currently, there isnot any checked baggage on the Michigan trains, which is an Amtrak policy due to limited staffed stations etc.

Amtrak says that golf bags and bikes will soon be accommodated. They need to install racks on the train to secure them, but this is supposed to happen yet this summer. That does not mean there will be checked baggage......just the ability for a passenger to load clubs or a bike.

Please watch the national Amtrak Web site for updates on this subject.

Janet Foran
Office of Communications
Michigan Department of Transportation
P.O.
